Government press release on incident in Brazil involving Vice-President of Republic

“Regarding the situation which occurred on Friday 14th of this month, at the Viracopos Sao Paulo (Brazil) Airport, in which the Vice-President of the Republic, His Excellency Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, was the victim of a violation of his rights and dignity by the customs and immigration services in that country, as they seized money and objects of value for personal use, in addition to the display of his diplomatic passport on social media, the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea regrets and expresses its most energetic condemnation of the incident, in which the privileges and respectful treatment granted to Senior Figures in accordance with the regulations contained under International Law were not observed.

Taking into account, in addition, that the trip abroad by the Vice-President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea also included other destinations, and that the seized money was to cover the costs of the official trip by the Vice-President and accompanying entourage, the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea is describing the actions as unfriendly and in bad faith on the part of the Viracopos airport authorities, who in addition misrepresented the true sum of money and the value of the confiscated jewels, thus violating the immunity and privileges granted to any person of this rank, in an attitude that bears no relation to the reciprocal trust and respect existing between the two Governments and peoples.

As a result, the Government of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea is once again reiterating to the authorities in the Federal Republic of Brazil that both the money and the personal objects of value seized be restored and returned to their owner in as short a time as possible, within the framework of the excellent and fruitful relations happily existing between the two States and Peoples.
