Thanksgiving mass to mark 50th Anniversary of National Independence

The esplanade of Malabo Cathedral was the setting for a gathering of Government, civil, religious figures, Christian associations from the various parishes, and guests, to give thanks for 50 years of independence.

The Eucharistic mass was said by the Pope Francis' Nuncio, Julio Mural, and was attended by the Archbishop of Malabo, Juan Nsue Edjang and various bishops and members of the clergy from the various parishes of Malabo, Bata and Cameroon, among other areas.

At around 11 in the morning, the mass began with words of welcome from the Archbishop, who described the 12th October as a day of jubilation for our homeland.

Then there was a speech by the President of the Republic, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who focussed on congratulating the people of Equatorial Guinea for their victory over colonialism in 1968, and for the happy commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary in an atmosphere of peace, solidarity, tranquillity and harmony. He also welcomed the guests who were taking part in the celebration.

At the same time, he recalled various events marked by the negative instincts of humankind, which reveal the error of the selfish nature of man in the world.

Among other things, he declared that we must give thanks to God, who inspired the international community to condemn colonialism as a crime against humanity, and he concluded by highlighting some events from sad memory.

Following the speech by the President of the Republic the National Anthem was played, with the flag taken to the altar by two members of the Government, and later presented to the representative of the Pope.

After this part of the ceremony, the mass continues with readings and the homily given by the Nuncio, followed by the offertory and communion. The mass concluded with a reading of the letter of congratulations sent by the Pope to the President of the Republic, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, read by Julio Mural.
